Curtis' 6 Tips FOR SUCCESS
1
If you are headed on a fishing trip to an area
you have never fished before, gains some local
knowledge. Contact a guide in the area you will
fish to figure out what gear you need and what
flies the fish are keying in on that tie of
year. There is nothing worse than getting to the
water and being unprepared.
2
Limit your number of false casts. The more time
you spend false casting the more chance you have
of scaring the fish or getting caught in the
trees.
3
Learn to read the water. Look for underwater
structure such as logs, rocks, undercut banks
which provide cover for fish from predators as
well as seams where fast moving water meets
slower moving water as fish will sit along here
to conserve energy while being able to easily
access food.
4
Knowing the difference between Fluorocarbon
(fluoro) and Monofilament (mono) leaders and
tippet can be a key to success. Mono floats
better, has more stretch, and has better knot
strength than fluoro. Fluoro is almost
invisible in water, more sensitive, has less
memory, and is more abrasion resistant.
5
Practice with the rod you are going to fish
with on your trip at home. Every rod is
different and you don't want to be learning
how to use your new rod when you should be
fishing.
6
Always have multiple flies of each pattern. I
have seen many times over the years fish will
key in on the fly you only have one of and
inevitabely you break that fly off or snag it
in a tree. Its better to have and not need
than to need and not have!
